One of the greatest problems many people face nowadays is the lack of order in their lives and misplaced priorities. We often forget that our lives depend on our priorities. Maybe you are wondering… “But what is the correct order of priorities? How should we conduct our life and our relationships?”

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Our Lord Jesus illustrates very clearly in this verse that He must be first in our lives and His will has to be done above anyone else’s will. He must be the love of our lives. However, what is happening today is that many people put their spouse and family members above God. In the order of most relationships, God is nowhere to be found and that’s why many are reaping disastrous consequences.

When we put God as first, we may even lose things in different areas of our life; things we consider dear to us such as a job or an asset but we’ll always have peace because we have the assurance that He will be there for us no matter the circumstance.

After God, we must strive to ensure that we are in second place. Why? Because we have to prioritise our relationship with Him and ensure that we are saved before we can save others. Think about it… How can we strenghten others if we are weak? It’s impossible! For this reason, we must meet our needs before meeting the needs of others. Once we understand and put into practice the first two steps, then we can focus on our neighbours such as our husband or wife. We must also remember that even within our relationships with others there must be a limit. For instance, it is crucial for a wife to submit to her husband; however, a wife can’t submit to her spouse if his actions are not according God’s principles. She will submit as long as it doesn’t go against God.

Although this is a hard concept for most people to grasp, the truth is that our lives, especially our relationships, will begin to flourish and bear good fruits when we follow the guidance given by Jesus and put Him in His rightful place.
