The Holy Spirit is a gift that is given by God; it cannot be bought. Although we cannot buy the Holy Spirit, we need to pay the price in order to receive Him because the Holy Spirit is the exceedingly great reward.
“After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” (Genesis 15:1).
A reward is something given in recognition of service, effort and achievement. The Holy Spirit is the greatest reward God can give. It goes beyond anything we can hope to receive in this world. The question that often arises from many people is this: “Why haven’t I received this reward from God?” It’s simple! God rewards those who honour Him; in other words, He gives His Spirit to those who pay the price.
Put simply, He gives His Spirit to those who are willing to deny their will in order for His will to be done. If we insist on doing our own will, it’s because we haven’t surrendered fully to Him and we still want to indulge in things that please our flesh, such as sex outside of marriage, lies, promiscuity, etc. The truth is that there are many who still harbour resentment, grudges, hurt, etc. Why? Because the desire to please their flesh is greater than the desire to honour God and this is where the problem often lies.
On account of this, we have to analyse ourselves and ask: What effort have I been making in order to be rewarded? Have I been sacrificing? Have I been paying the price? Or Have I been allowing the fire that I once had to dwindle inside of me? The Holy Spirit is like a hidden treasure that cannot be found easily. We can’t see Him, but He exists and that’s why if we don’t sacrifice we will never find Him.
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” (Matthew 13:44).
Our Lord Jesus used this parable to illustrate the fact that with God it’s ALL for ALL. The man didn’t consider anything he had more important than the field. He gave everything He had to find this great treasure.
The reality of the situation is that many haven’t yet surrendered their all; they give to God what they want and not what He requires. When we come to God, we have to be ready to bury our old self. We can’t have one foot in the world and one foot with God…These two mindsets cannot co-exist. When we make the decision to give ourselves entirely to Him, God responds by manifesting Himself greatly in our lives.
Indeed, God is righteous; if we honour Him He will honour us and make us the blessing itself. He rewards us for the sacrifices we make on a daily basis. He sees when our intentions are solely to glorify His name. That’s why the Holy Spirit in us is God’s honour within us and He is looking for people who are willing to show Him their faith in order to receive the exceedingly great reward.
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).
Our God is a rewarder and His eyes are always searching for those whom He can bless. However, God does not reward half-hearted offerings… It’s All or Nothing! For this reason, we must be willing to make the effort in other to receive the greatest honour of all: The Holy Spirit. Having the Holy Spirit is not optional, it is a necessity! It is the fuel that will enable us to keep persevering and consequently enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
