The 3-Week Journey in the Faith of Abraham – Day 16

“Then God opened her eyes…”

Day 16

Genesis 21…

14 “Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.”

Whist there was water, she and the boy kept wandering in the desert; but when the water ran out, affliction and despair took over. This means that as long as we don’t hit rock bottom, we still can bear difficult situations. We try to get out of them with any strength we have left. It is only when we reach rock bottom and realize we have nowhere else to turn to, that’s when we look up and start to depend on God.

That’s what Hagar did. To avoid seeing the death of her son, she put him under a shrub, sat opposite him, lifted her voice and wept bitterly. Ishmael also began to cry and certainly that’s when God took notice that Abraham’s seed cried out from the earth! God could not turn His back on the boy because He made a promise to Abraham to bless him.

17 And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.”

19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink…

One question comes to mind: Was the well already there or did God brought it into existence at that moment?

For sure the well was already there, but because Hagar’s distress was so great, she simply could not see it! The same happens to many people, the solution to their problems is right in front of them, but they can’t see it!

God doesn’t want just to relieve your thirst, or to solve just one problem. He wants to turn your life into a fountain of blessings!

God has seen your suffering and He has heard your cry! He is opening your eyes to see the opportunity to turn your life into a fountain of blessings, it is right in front of you…

We have to be connect with Him in order to see what is prepared for us. Despair and panic does not get us anywhere.
