Virus #3

“When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, He said to them, ‘Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.’ And they ridiculed Him. But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose,” Matthew 9.23-25.

It was not normal for Jesus to have people removed from His presence. So why did He have these people put outside of the house? Because they were contaminated with the virus that we are speaking to you about today, the virus that cancels out the power of faith, our connection with God:

God warns us about the dangers of believing in what we feel: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” Jeremiah 17.9. The heart is the center of our emotions and tries its best to convince us that what it says is true. Here, God explains that its nature is deceitful and wicked.

The heart can make you fall in love with someone who mistreats you, and make you mistreat someone who truly loves you. It makes people act irrationally and drives them to commit the worst atrocities:

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies,” Matthew 15.19. It can also lead sincere people who are seeking God to a counterfeit, emotional faith based on feelings rather than the Word of God.

Consider how people of God in the Bible achieved great victories through pure faith, and how the very same people were put to shame and defeated whenever they allowed themselves to be contaminated by the virus of emotion:

DAVID: By faith he defeated the giant, and through emotion he committed adultery and even murder (2 Samuel 11.2)

PETER: By faith he walked on the water, and through emotion he sank, denied Jesus and listen to the voice of the devil (Mat 14.30)

SAMSON: By faith he killed 1000 Philistines, and through emotion broke his vow with God, lost his strength and was blinded (Judges 16)

MOSES: By faith he parted the Red Sea, and through emotion he did not trust and failed to enter the Promised Land (Num 20.11-12)

This virus still exists today and is at work even in Christian circles. Look at some examples of what it uses:

  • Music: Many are drawn into a false state of well being through beautiful melodies. They sing, cry and worship for hours on end, but when the music stops they find that they are still weak and lost. After the “amazing” worship time they still do not know how to overcome their problems, stop sinning, etc.
  • Religion: Emotion does not encourage reason. It tells people to concentrate on feelings and to say nice things, but does not address the reality of their lives. It says it believes in a big God, but makes people content in their misery. It preaches about a Holy God, but leads people to live in sin, hypocrisy, etc. Emotion makes people religious.
  • Deceptions: Through feelings satan convinces many believers to accept false doctrines that in no way benefit the Kingdom of God, that go against His Word and that even bring shame to the name of Jesus (being slain in the Spirit, laughing in the Spirit, visions, etc.).

Emotion makes a person feel good inside the church, and weak and helpless outside of it.
